아름다운 몸짓이라고 하면, 무엇이 떠오르시나요? 선이 고운 무용수의 춤, 무대 위 연극 배우의 손짓이려나요.
그렇다면 이 몸짓들은 어떠세요? 글쓰기의 몸짓, 식물 재배의 몸짓, 파이프 담배를 피우는 몸짓, 면도의 몸짓, 음악을 듣는 몸짓, 전화 통화의 몸짓. 아름다움과는 거리가 멀게 느껴지시나요.
《몸짓들》의 저자 빌렘 플루서는 보다 일상적인 행동들을 관찰합니다. 자세히 살필수록 플루서의 눈에는 다른 게 보이기 시작합니다. “단선적이고, 한심하게 일차원적인 몸짓”처럼 보이는 것들 뒤에 숨겨진 의미와 감정들이요.
”어떤 몸짓을 통해서 표명되지 않는 생각이란 없다. 표명 이전의 생각은 하나의 가상성, 즉 아무것도 아닌 것에 불과하다. 생각은 몸짓을 통해서 실현된다.” (37-38쪽)
본연에 다가가는
«셀바티코(Selvatico)»는 라틴어로 ‘야생의’라는 뜻입니다. 우리는 그것을 길들여지지 않은 상태, ‘본연’이라고 해석합니다.
사전에서 본연이라는 단어를 찾으면 두 가지 뜻을 알려 줍니다. 첫째, 인공을 가하지 아니한 본디 그대로의 자연. 둘째, 본디 생긴 그대로의 타고난 상태.
세상은 때로 더하고자 애씁니다. 이 또한 몸짓이지요. 하지만 우리는 있는 그대로의 모습에 집중하고자 했습니다. 바깥의 어떠한 시선도 신경 쓰지 않은 채, 그저 내 안에만 귀 기울이는 몸짓 말이죠.

”‘몸짓’이라는 개념은 그로써 자유가 표현되는 움직임이라고 정의할 수 있다. 움직임으로서 몸짓은, 다른 모든 움직임들과 마찬가지로 결정된 것이고, 그런 의미에서 완전히 설명할 수 있다. 그러나 몸짓의 특유한 점은, 이와는 전혀 무관하게, 그것이 우리가 ‘자유’라고 부를 수밖에 없는 어떤 내면성의 표현이라는 것이다.” (234쪽)

What comes to mind when you think of beautiful gestures? It might be a dancer’s graceful movements, the beckoning of a theater actor on stage.
But what about these gestures? The gesture of writing, the gesture of growing plants, the gesture of smoking a pipe, the gesture of shaving, the gesture of listening to music, the gesture of talking on the phone. They seem far from beautiful.
Willem Flusser, author of «Gestures», observes more mundane behaviors. The closer he looks, the more he begins to see something else. The meanings and emotions behind what seem like "one-line, seemingly pathetic, one-dimensional gestures."
”Every thought is expressed through a gesture. A thought, before it is manifested, is nothing more than virtuality—essentially, nothingness. Thoughts are realized through gestures.”
Getting Closer to the Essence
“Selvatico” means 'wild' in Latin. We interpret it as untamed nature.
Look up the word original in a dictionary, and you'll find two meanings. First, nature as it is, without artificiality. Second, the innate state of being as it is.
The world often strives to add more—a gesture in itself. But we chose to focus on simply being. The gesture of not caring about any outside gaze, just listening to yourself.

”The concept of gesture can be defined as a movement that expresses freedom. Like all other movements, a gesture is determined and, in that sense, fully explainable. However, what makes a gesture unique is that, despite being determined, it expresses a certain interiority—one that we can only call “freedom.””
